Building Sustainable Marine Bait Production While Protecting Mangrove Ecosystems

The project marks a major step forward in promoting sustainable artisanal fisheries through the establishment of a dedicated marine bait worm hatchery, nursery, and grow-out facilities. These facilities are designed to support environmentally responsible production of high-quality marine bait worms under controlled conditions.

By shifting bait supply away from destructive wild harvesting practices, the initiative directly reduces pressure on mangrove ecosystems while ensuring consistent availability of bait for coastal fishing communities.

A key component of the project is capacity building at the community level. Staff members and selected community participants are being trained in sustainable worm culture techniques, water quality management, biosecurity, and responsible aquaculture practices.

Training also integrates mangrove conservation awareness, emphasizing the critical role healthy mangrove ecosystems play in supporting fisheries, protecting coastlines, and sustaining marine biodiversity. This approach ensures that conservation principles are embedded directly into day-to-day production activities.

Following the establishment of infrastructure and training, the project has commenced the production of marine bait worms and value-added feed products. These outputs are tailored to meet the needs of artisanal fishers and small-scale mariculture farmers, providing an affordable and reliable alternative to wild-collected bait. Consistent access to quality bait improves fishing efficiency, stabilizes incomes, and strengthens local food security along the coast.

Distribution of the sustainably produced bait is being carried out in collaboration with local fishing groups, cooperatives, and mariculture practitioners. Priority is given to artisanal fishers operating in mangrove-dependent fishing areas, helping to reduce unsustainable harvesting activities. This community-centred distribution model reinforces responsible resource use while strengthening local fisheries value chains.

To ensure long-term sustainability and accountability, the project includes ongoing monitoring of mangrove ecosystem health and overall project impact. Environmental indicators, production performance, and community livelihood outcomes are regularly assessed to guide adaptive management.
