Sustainable Bait Production & Mangrove Protection Initiative
This project focuses on establishing a sustainable, community-based marine bait production initiative in Kwale County, Kenya. It introduces environmentally responsible rearing of marine bait worms to support artisanal fisheries and small-scale mariculture enterprises.
By providing a reliable and affordable alternative to wild-harvested bait, the project reduces harmful extraction practices in mangrove and intertidal ecosystems, helping to preserve critical coastal habitats that underpin fisheries productivity and the wider blue economy.
In addition to strengthening fisheries value chains, the project integrates conservation, livelihoods, and capacity building at the community level. It creates employment and skills development opportunities for coastal youth and women, supports local fishing groups with consistent aquaculture inputs, and promotes long-term mangrove ecosystem health.
Through this integrated approach, the initiative enhances climate resilience, improves income stability for artisanal fishers, and demonstrates a scalable model for conservation-linked aquaculture in coastal communities.
Project Objectives
Establish a sustainable and scalable marine bait worm rearing system
Provide affordable and reliable bait and feed alternatives for artisanal fishers and mariculture farmers
Reduce pressure on mangrove ecosystems caused by wild bait harvesting
Create green employment and skills development opportunities for coastal youth and women
Strengthen community-led marine conservation and climate resilience efforts
Challenges
Degradation of mangrove ecosystems due to unsustainable bait harvesting
Limited access to affordable and consistent fishing bait and mariculture feeds
Income instability among artisanal fishers
Lack of locally available, environmentally sustainable aquaculture inputs
